Skills
Every class has its skills: class skills, known from the start, and skills learned from skill books. How skills are learned (grades, steps, books, skill points) is on Classes.
Kinds of skills
- Passive: always on once learned; it costs no MP and does not go on the shortcut bar.
- Instant: goes off as soon as it is used.
- Cast: charged by holding the skill button before it goes off.
- Chant: turned on and off; it affects the party members near the caster while it is on.
Using skills
- A skill costs its MP each time it is used; the cost grows with the step within the grade. A class skill has a fixed cost.
- After a use, a skill recharges before it can be used again. The recharge time on each skill page is at DEX 20; the time is that × (520 − DEX) / 500, but never less than half of it (reached at DEX 270). DEX counts with the bonuses of the equipment worn.
- A skill with an area also reaches the creatures within that distance of the target, up to 10 in all; one use hits at most 5 monsters. It pays its MP once for up to 5 targets, and once more for each target after the fifth. Without the MP, the targets get nothing.
- Damage and effects: weapon skills, Magic damage, Status effects.
