Gems go into the sockets of equipment and give a bonus by the kind of gem, the kind of item and the socket: see Gems for the bonuses. A chip gives the bonus once, a small gem twice and a full gem three times.

Sockets

  • Pick up a gem and put it on an item with a free socket. It goes into the next free socket; this costs nothing and never fails.
  • An item has the sockets shown in its table, and upgrades add more: at most 6 on an item that takes one square of the inventory, 8 on a larger one.
  • Gems give bonuses only in weapons and arms, body armour, shields and helmets (head armour for the Akhan).
  • A failed upgrade takes the gems out of the item and destroys them.
